After launching three exhibitions with HeavonEarth at the beginning of 2008, my wife Monique and I decided to work on a collaborative piece as an entry into a local wearable arts competition. My wife, also a creative, would use her seamstress skills to build a shared vision applicable to the section theme of Pacifica. Maunga Korowai, the Maori name for Mountain Cloak, would use recycled and natural materials to represent our local Mount Taranaki, and greater Aotearoa, New Zealand, as a korowai stretching from the shell and paua encrusted coast, the harekeke filled forest lands and peaking with the snow, cloud, silver-fern and volcanic summit. The entry was selected as a finalist at the Taranaki Daily News Fashion Art Awards at TSB Showplace, New Plymouth in November 2008. Modelled by a friend of the family, the project was a good first lesson in shared creativity and the logistics of making a visual idea into a feasible reality.
